Facial Muscles

The main functions of the facial muscles include giving a shape and form to the face while enabling a person to express his/her emotions and helping in the chewing of food. The facial muscles are made up of a composite of large and small sections of muscular tissues which aid us in simple activities like smiling, laughing, crying, frowning or kissing. Some of the important muscles of the face are as follows:

● Orbicularis Oculi: These are around the eye-socket and help us in closing or opening our eyes.

● Orbicularis oris: These help us in contracting the muscles of our mouth in order to pucker the lips.

● Temporalis: This muscle helps us in chewing food.

● Risorius: This muscle helps us in smiling, by pulling the corners of the mouth backwards.

The different muscles of the face overlap each other forming a mask of muscular tissues attached to the skull and the jawbone. These muscles are also attached to various other muscles below the head, providing an individual with a number of expressions to express oneself. This helps in creating an effective mode of communication, coupled with verbal abilities.

Hypothesis

Like all the other muscles of the body, facial muscles are also prone to disorders and ailments. These ailments can obstruct one’s ability to chew food properly, to speak clearly or to communicate one’s emotions effectively. The common ailments affecting the facial muscles are Bell’s palsy, Twitching of Facial Muscles and Stroke. An overview of these ailments is as follows:

Bell’s palsy: This disorder causes a temporary paralysis of the facial muscles, causing it to droop or become stiff towards one side. The person suffering from it will have difficulty in smiling and closing the eyelids of the affected area. It occurs when the nerves controlling the muscles become swollen, compressed or inflamed. Experts believe that it’s most likely to be caused by a viral infection. The symptoms usually start after one or two weeks of having a cold, eye infection or ear infection, occurring abruptly while you wake up in the morning or start chewing your food. It may also cause synkinesis, where two unrelated muscles move involuntarily, like one’s eye may close while he/she smiles. Fortunately, people recover from Bell’s palsy within two weeks to six months, depending on the damage occurred to the nerves.

Twitching of Facial Muscles : Twitching of facial muscles is a neurological disorder, although it is not very serious issue but causes embarrassment. It is mainly caused because of generation of extra electrical pulse in the brain.

Stroke: This happens when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and starts bleeding, or when there is a blockage in the supply of blood to the brain cells. Consequently, this causes a deficient supply of oxygen to the brain tissues. This causes the paralysis of the facial muscles, while it can spread to other muscles as well resulting in loss of coordination and balance. It’s a serious medical condition and requires prompt medical attention. If timely treatment is provided, then a person can recover from the after-effects but that usually takes some time.
