Prostate

The prostate gland is the size of a small apricot, weighing about 20 to 25 gms. It is located between the bladder and the penis, while also being near to the rectum. Its structure is made up of layers and it surrounds the urethra (passage to let out urine) emerging from the bladder like an onion, with the innermost layer (transition zone) being closest to it. This gland is vital for reproduction as it produces the Prostatic fluid, which helps the sperm cells in the semen to live longer, be more mobile to fertilize a woman’s eggs and retain the genetic information that they carry. During ejaculation, millions of sperm cells from the testes travel to the urethra through two tubes called vas deferens. In the middle of this route, the seminal vesicles add some more fluid to the semen. Once the semen gets inside the urethra, the prostate contracts to block the connection between the bladder and the urethra. Then it secretes the Prostatic fluid in it and makes the semen rush out of the urethra and ultimately out of the penis.

Increasing age poses a great threat to the wellness of the prostate and so does its location in the body. Some common ailments affecting the prostate include Prostatitis, Enlarged prostate and prostate cancer. An overview of these diseases is as follows:

Prostatitis: The inflammation and swelling of the prostate gland are known as prostatitis. Although it affects men of all ages, it mostly occurs in males of 50 years or younger. In some cases, the exact causes of its onset are not known but there are several cases where it’s caused by bacteria which leak into the gland through the urethra and damage in the nerves of the lower which may be an aftermath of surgery or injury to the area. Symptoms experienced by the sufferer include a burning sensation while urinating, frequent urination and pain in the penis or testicles.

Enlarged Prostate: Otherwise known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common ailment which troubles men in their old age. The prostate gland becomes enlarged and blocks the flow of urine from the bladder. The inner layer of the prostate keeps growing gradually as men age, sometimes growing large enough to block the passage of urine. A possible cause of this can be the imbalance in sex hormones due to age. The sufferer experiences difficulty in urinating, frequent urge to urinate at night and inability to completely drain the bladder.

Prostate Cancer: This form of cancer affects thousands of men from around the world. More than 80% of males possess this cancer if they die of old age. Mostly it affects men who are past the age of 65 years. Malignant tumours occur inside the prostate, while there’s always a looming risk of it spreading to other parts of the body. Older people who are obese and have a familial history of cancer are at an increased risk. Blood in the urine and pain in the pelvis are the earliest signs of this and one must immediately seek out medical help if these symptoms occur.
