Cyst

Cysts are a sac of tissue which may be filled with air, liquid or any other organic substance. These can emerge anywhere inside your body or under the skin. Most of them are benign and are not susceptible to cause cancer. Whether a cyst needs medical attention or not depends on factors like it’s the location in the body, its type, whether it’s infected and if it’s causing pain. There’s a chance that cysts can form inside one’s body, where the person may have no feeling of it being present. However, sometimes they can cause hindrance in the functioning of different organs. For instance, ovarian cysts may hinder the functioning of the ovary and the reproductive system as a whole. Cysts formed in the kidney due to Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) can cause problems in the kidney. These sacs mostly don’t cause pain and may vary in size. Reasons behind them forming in the body may range from infections, inflammations, inherited diseases or some unexpected blockage in a duct, and there are a number of its types. It’s advisable to get medical assistance if a cyst persists in your body for long and has become painful, as it can be a sign of an underlying infection or maybe even cancer.

Hypothesis

A cyst is an abnormal structure which can appear anywhere in or on the body and shouldn’t be left ignored for long. It can either trigger an infection or a disease, so it would be better to consult a physician to assure whether it’s benign or not. The common ailments associated with a cyst are namely Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Polycystic Kidney Disease and Fibrocystic Breast Disease. An overview of these ailments is as follows:

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Otherwise abbreviated as PCOS, this ailment is known to cause abnormality in the functioning of the ovary and also an increase of the androgen hormone in a woman’s body. The ovaries of women diagnosed with this disease have a number of small cysts within them, because of which the disease’s name contains the word “polycystic”. Root cause is rupturing of an over grown egg and its debris causes obstruction which may give symptoms i.e. erratic or no menstrual period, acne, obesity and excess hair growth etc.

Polycystic Kidney Disease: This is an inherited disease which is caused due to abnormal mutations in the genes. Numerous fluid-filled cysts develop on the surface of the kidney, causing it to malfunction and enlarge gradually. Although these cysts are noncancerous, their presence in a large number and the increase in their size can cause harm to the kidney. Evident symptoms include an increase in the size of the abdomen due to enlarged kidneys, blood in the urine, kidney failure and high blood pressure. People with this ailment have an increased risk of developing cysts in the liver with increasing age, which is an expected complication of this condition. Fibrocystic
