Colon

The colon is a part of the large intestine, which performs the final part of the human digestive system. This is a tubular organ about 5 feet in length which consists of four parts, namely the descending colon, ascending colon, traverse colon and sigmoid colon. The whole structure forms a T-like structure, with the descending colon being on the left-side of the large intestine. Descending colon stores the waste food to be emptied into the rectum, while this whole organ is held in place with the help of a thin layer of tissue. During the crucial process of digestion, the small intestine has a more important role of absorbing nutrients from the ingested food; the large intestine has a less significant yet indispensable role to perform. It stores waste and extracts water from it, making the stool hard. Additionally, it also maintains the water-balance of the body absorbs certain vitamins like Vitamin K and facilitates bacteria-aided fermentation.
