Generally, the term is used to describe a collection of devices that function together as a system. In 1837, Charles Babbage, a British professor of mathematics described his idea for the Analytical Engine, the first stored-program mechanical computer.

A computer is a machine which can take instructions, and perform computations based on those instructions. It is the ability to take instructions often known as programs in the idiom of computers and execute them, that distinguishes a computer from a mechanical calculator. While both are able to make computations, a calculator responds simply to immediate input. In fact, most modern calculators are actually computers, with a number of pre-installed programs to help aid in complex tasks. Computers range from the very small to the very large. Some are capable of doing millions of calculations in a single second, while others may take long periods of time.

The computer is one of the most powerful innovations in human history. With the use of computers, people are suddenly able to perform a confounding amount of computations at dazzling speeds. Information can be crunched, organized, and displayed in the blink of an eye.

At one time, computers were extremely large, and required enormous amounts of power. This made them useful only for a small amount of tasks computing trajectories for astronomical or military applications, for example, or code breaking. Over time, with technological advances, the computer was scaled down and its energy requirements lowered immensely. This allowed the power of the computer to be harnessed for a staggering array of uses.

The UNIVAC I (Universal Automatic Computer) was the first commercially available, “mass produced” electronic computer manufactured by Remington Rand in the USA and was delivered to the US Census Bureau in June 1951. By the 1990s, the microcomputer (laptop) or Personal Computer (PC) became a common household appliance, and became even more widespread with the advent of the Internet.

Component of computer: Input devices. Central Processing Unit (containing the control unit and the arithmetic/logic unit). Memory. Output devices. Storage devices.

All computer processing requires data, which is a collection of raw facts, figures and symbols, such as numbers, words, images, video and sound, given to the computer during the input phase. Computers manipulate data to create information. Information is data that is organized, meaningful, and useful. During the output Phase, the information that has been created is put into some form, such as a printed report. The information can also be put in computer storage for future use. It must be given a detailed list of instructions, called a compute program or software, that tells it exactly what to do. Before processing a specific job, the computer program corresponding to that job must be stored in memory. Once the program is stored in memory the compute can start the operation by executing the program instructions one after the other.

What is Laptop?
A laptop is a computer that can be folded up and carried around. A laptop computer is a personal computer for mobile use. The laptop was created mainly for this particular reason. In order to develop a laptop a computer technology was taken and then scaled to smaller size. Laptops are small portable computers that you can operate keeping on your lap. Laptops now days include all the features provided by a standard desktop computer like keyboard, display, a pointing device (functions like mouse) and speakers. A laptops is powered by a rechargeable battery that can last up to a few hours. A laptop is powered by mains electricity via an AC adapter, and can be used away from an outlet using a rechargeable battery. Laptops are also sometimes called notebook computers or notebooks.

The laptop was invented by Adam Osborne in 1981. It was called ‘Osborne 1’ and cost $1,795. It came bundled with $1,500 worth of programmes. It had a tiny computer screen built into it. It was invented by Osborne Computers. The first portable computer was a success, with sales reaching 10,000 units a month.

Heavy laptop use over a number of years “may cause irreversible or partially reversible changes in male reproductive function and make low sperm quality”. The rise in temperature of scrotum more than one degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) is enough to damage sperm. Under normal circumstances, the testicles’ position outside of the body makes sure they stay a few degrees cooler than the inside of the body, which is necessary for sperm production. Frequent laptop use might contribute to reproductive problems, because the scrotum is kept at an elevated temperature and doesn’t have time to cool down to the temperature required for good sperm production.

For example, don’t sit the laptop directly on your lap but place it on another surface instead. Sit a good distance away from the screen, although the radiation coming from laptop screen is actually less than that coming from a standard computer monitor. You could even go further if you like and purchase a laptop shield that is designed to block any radiation.
